Happy Independence Day: Celebrating Freedom and Creativity in Design

First off, I hope everyone finds freedom from disease, distress, and dogma on this Independence Day! May we all embrace the things that truly matter—health, joy, and creativity. ✨

Now, onto my floor lamp story—a true tale of persistence and a little design improvisation! I came across this metal grill that instantly caught my eye, but there was a problem: it wasn’t quite long enough to be the floor lamp I envisioned. Not one to be deterred, I soon found a stone base in someone’s garden that wasn’t being used. Naturally, I “borrowed” it, as one does when struck by inspiration. 😉

Next came the tricky part—getting my furniture person to help me combine the stone base, metal grill, and some additional wood to give it the necessary height. She grumbled (and I suspect wanted to squeeze my neck for all my demands), but she ultimately complied, and voila—a one-of-a-kind floor lamp was born!

For the finishing touch, I dug out an old lampshade that I had added fringes to years ago—another one of Roopa’s unfinished design ideas finally seeing the light of day. Although I still dream of a fancy stained-glass shade to top it off, for now, I’m just thrilled with the eclectic stone, metal, and wood combo. It’s a celebration of mixing materials and embracing imperfections to create something truly unique.

Persistence Pays Off in Design

Designing a home isn’t just about perfect finishes and pristine pieces. It’s about experimenting, improvising, and persisting until you create something that feels right to you. Whether it’s repurposing found objects or finally bringing a long-forgotten idea to life, the journey is what makes a space truly yours.

All is possible—we just have to persist.

How to Create Unique Décor Using Found Objects:

  1. Mix Materials: Don’t be afraid to combine different textures—like stone, wood, and metal. This adds depth and character to your décor.
  2. Repurpose with Purpose: If you find something you love, even if it’s not perfect, think creatively about how you can make it work. Sometimes a little adjustment is all it takes!
  3. Be Patient: Great design doesn’t happen overnight. Some of the best pieces evolve over time, through trial, error, and patience.

For now, I’m celebrating this happy blend of materials and the story behind it. Hallelujah for persistence and the creative process!

Much

love,

R
