Don’t Feel Like It? Do It Anyway-Krishna’s Guide to Doing What Needs to Be Done

Feelings Are a Map, Not the Destination – A Lesson from Krishna’s Life.

In today’s world, we’re encouraged to feel, validate, and express. But we often forget, feelings are also fleeting. They are a map, not the destination.

Sri Krishna reminded Arjuna of this on the battlefield. When Arjuna “did not feel like” fighting, Krishna said-

“Park your petty feelings and arise and do what needs to be done.”

To do what needs to be done requires clarity and the ability to witness feelings without letting them decide our actions. That’s a skill. And Krishna lived it, not just preached it.

Krishna Felt Deeply – yet did what needed to be done. He loved, he grieved, he longed, and yet, he moved with purpose. He never let emotion derail his rightful actions.

He loved Radha, but left Gokula. He didn’t leave because he stopped feeling. He left because his path demanded it.

He built Dwaraka to protect his people. He didn’t hang on to his land out of emotion. When Mathura was attacked again and again by Jarasandha, he chose not war, but wisdom. He moved his people to safety. He did what needed to be done for his people and protect them.

He lifted the Sudarshana Chakra for Arjuna. He had vowed not to fight. But when Bhishma was about to overpower Arjuna, Krishna broke his own vow. He didn’t let the ego of holding on to a vow, that is no longer helpful, decide his action.

He allowed the destruction of his own clan. When he saw that their paths and characters no longer was helpful to the world ,  he let it end than hanging on to it out of familial guilt.

What Does This Mean for Us?

It means this: Feelings matter, they can help us sense, but they are not the final word.

They are a compass, not a command. I often do what needs to be done. It has carried me through many hard seasons, regardless of how I felt. More often than not, I feel deeply – sadness, resistance, fatigue. But I act anyway. Because action is not always born from motivation it is born from clarity.

So:

Do that workout.
Take that rest.
Eat the nourishing food.
Dance. Journal. Speak your truth.
Do what needs to be done.

Even if you don’t feel like it.

 Reflection Prompt:

What are you resisting today because “you don’t feel like it”?
What if doing it anyway is your next act of devotion
