It’s always a choice—what we focus on. Choosing joy and goodness always makes the day better. But many people ask, “How can you focus on joy when there is so much pain around?”
That’s exactly when choosing joy becomes most important. To stay healthy and make a positive impact on the people around us, we must pick joy and happiness as a conscious choice. This choice helps us stay physically fit and mentally alert, even through difficult times.
If we are already in emotional pain, adding more suffering through guilt, shame, negativity, or fear only keeps us stuck. Like attracts like, and if we begin with a moment of joy, it grows. But choosing joy is not easy—it’s a spiritual discipline. It’s not about “buying beautiful stuff” or “faking it till you make it.” It’s a deliberate choice to reach for a moment of joy again and again until it becomes our default view. By then, we may realize our whole life has shifted.
The truth is, we’re not resistant to joy because we don’t want it—we’re afraid of it. We’re afraid that if we choose joy consistently, we’ll have to let go of familiar narratives of victimhood, whether of people or circumstance. Choosing joy takes tremendous courage. It demands that we forgive—both ourselves and those who have hurt us.
Still not convinced? Think of it this way: Life can be tough, and pain is inevitable. We may feel bound to be miserable—so why not create a beautiful space to hold that struggle? Why let your surroundings reflect the same pain you’re already feeling?
Keep yourself safe, and keep your home clean and beautiful. Choosing joy, in any way you can, makes this phase of life much more tolerable—and, perhaps, even joyful.
