Feeling Unwanted and Worthless? What a Pink Swing Taught Me

Bright pink repurposed wooden swing made from two old doors, hanging in a garden courtyard

Now have you arrived at being not wanted in your life? Feeling unwanted, unloved and worthless? Fear not 🙂 You have endless possibilities!!! I am not diminishing the pain, but having been there, I know it’s a different vantage point. A great opportunity to rebuild yourself in a way that honors you the most.

I found two old doors in my friend Praveen’s place after he renovated. He had no use for them anymore. They didn’t fit into his life anymore, just like we all become redundant in our own lives, in relationships, sometimes without even realizing it. They sat outside for a while, positively disheveled, and he was planning to send them off as debris, thrown out the way someone throws out anything they’ve decided they don’t want: “I don’t want it, it’s useless.” He knew I was repurposing old things for my newly built home, Swasti, so when he saw me eyeing them, he told me to just take them, he’d even send them over. An auto delivered them to my place, along with a bunch of old grill-fences that later became gates for my garden. The doors sat with me for a while, confused and lost, before I called Bharati, my favourite furniture person, and asked her to take a look. The carpenter scraped off the old paint, and underneath was solid hardwood. It had been good wood all along. It just needed a bit of imagination and work. So we joined the two doors into one swing, wide enough to lie down on, and hung it in the back yard. Then, remembering my childhood love for Chandamama comics, I painted it in-your-face pink. It made me laugh out loud. Not just smile.

Right now, I sit on that pink plank, chained firmly to a large beam, swinging like a child again. It never gets old. Life finds a place where we heal, where we find purpose again. We become beautiful in new eyes, and our intrinsic value gets called on and cherished. Don’t doubt your intrinsic value. We just have to work on finding a version of ourselves suited to the environment that fits us best.

TRY THIS

If today is heavy: Then take care of yourself. A song, a cup of coffee, a walk, a hug or a call to a friend. Anything that shifts you for few minutes.

If you are ready: Don’t ask why you are worthless, ask why you are okay being called worthless. What fears, guilts and regrets do you carry to accept that?

Where’s your wrong house? Tell me below.

You were never useless. You were just in the wrong house.
